I can see all the focus is about the forthcoming ICC World Cup and why not, it's the biggest event to ever come to the modern day Guyana. This is our BIG chance to show the outside world where we are and how beautiful our country is. Our long term goal is to create a country which can compete with the best of what our sister islands have to offer.
I access most of the governments sites to check on the development of Guyana and the tourist board says that tourist numbers to Guyana has doubled over the past year. I am not a famous person or someone who has been educated with degrees. I only wonder why is it that plans were drawn up to convert Ogle Aerodrome in to a Municipal Airport instead of an airport with the capability to handle international jet aircraft from such countries as the USA, Canada and Europe. If we are asking for funding from major donors we should try to make full use to these funds. People are willing to help us and that has been shown by the help we have had from India with the new stadium.
With a new international airport so close to our capital city we can firmly put Guyana on the map. We would cut the transfer time and reduce the amount of incidents that happen during transfers to and from the airport. People who have moved abroad do not feel safe going back. The road structure is already there and is better lit than the road down to CJIA.
CJIA is a good but there is no room for expansion. 737's are fine but we want to be attracting the 757's, 767's, 777's and the airbus aircraft. With the latest agreement just signed between British Airways and the new Caribbean Airlines for a 777 to go from London direct to Port of Spain, wouldn't there have been a possibility to send that plane to Guyana. Ogle should be the new airport for a new era in Guyana.
As I have said already, I am a nobody in this world but I just thought I would share this vision and maybe someone would start something that would lead to a brighter future for Guyana.
